C. Transit Protection
A. Our 14 Step Moving Process
To ensure you are comfortable with all aspects of your move and our services we have outlined the 14 Steps of our moving process. This will give you a good idea of what you can expect from us and what will be expected of you. Please contact us if you have any questions.
1. Determine the Weight of Your Goods
The best way to determine this is to use the Get A Qupte form on this website. Or if you prefer, one of our Moving Consultants can email you a List of Goods, or we can give you a List of Goods during an in-home estimate.
2. We Provide You With Our Estimate
Once we know the weight of your shipment, where you are moving to and from, and when you are moving we will provide you with an estimate of costs.
3. You Book Our Services
We require a deposit upon booking. The deposit is taken, a reservation (registration) number is issued and your move is booked for the agreed upon date. We forward you a Customer Responsibility Form at this time via email, so it is important that we have your correct email address at the time your reservation is made.
4. We Reconfirm The Details 24 Hours Before Your Move or Packing Date
We will contact you by phone or email at least 24 hours prior to your move or packing date to reconfirm your start time and address and services. If for some reason we have not been able to reach you it is important that you contact our Dispatch Office 24 hours prior to your move date so we can make the final arrangements.
5. Our Crew is Dispatched to Your Location
The crew that has been assigned to your move will be dispatched and arrive by your scheduled start time. In the event that they are delayed due to traffic or any other unforeseen circumstances they will contact you in advance to advise you of the delay.
6. Review of Your Goods, Your Contract, and the Services We’ll Be Providing
When we arrive you will be introduced to your moving crew and we will lay floor runners to protect the main traffic areas. The Van Foreman will ask you to review and sign the contract, and will walk through your home with you to confirm the list of goods and services we will be providing as listed on your Bill of Lading.
7. Packing
If we pack your household goods all items are professionally packaged in appropriate moving cartons, and all packed items are covered for insurance purposes. You are welcome to do your own packing as long as you understand your goods cannot be insured as we cannot confirm they were professionally wrapped and packaged.
8. If Moving To Storage or Long Distance
If your goods are moving to storage or long distance, an inventory of the items you are shipping and their condition at origin will be created. It is important that you review this Inventory with the Van Forman to ensure you agree with the Inventory.
9. Wrapping
Sofa sets, mattresses and box springs are plastic wrapped at a small additional cost of $10.00 per unit; which prevents damage and stains. Your other furniture will be blanket wrapped to protect it and loaded onto the truck.
10. Determination of Final Charges and Arrival Date
The next step is to weigh (scale) your shipment to determine the final charges. Before the truck arrives at your home it is weighed. This gives us the 'Light Weight' (Tare) of the truck before we load your shipment. After the truck is loaded we return to the scale to get the 'Heavy Weight' of your truck (Gross weight). The Tare weight is subtracted from the Gross weight to give us the 'Net Weight' or weight of your shipment. This information is forwarded to our Dispatch by the Van Foreman and within 24 business hours the final charges are forwarded to you by phone or email. You will also be given an approximate arrival date at your new residence which will coincide with the delivery period on your Bill of Lading.
11. Notification of Delivery at Destination
Your Van Foreman will be in contact with you at least 24 hours before arrival at your new residence. At this time your final delivery date and time will be agreed to.
12. Payment of Balance Due
You are required to pay the full balance due when the truck arrives to your new home - before it is unloaded. For payment we accept: Cash, Money Order, Bank Draft, Visa, MasterCard, or Billing if it has been pre-approved. Money Orders and Bank Drafts are payable to Canada's Superior Moving Company.
13. Unloading Your Goods
Upon arrival our crew will lay floor runners to protect your floors in the high traffic areas of your new home. You will be required to instruct the crew as to which room and location you would like your items delivered. You are also required to check the items against your Inventory and verify that their condition is the same as when loaded at your origin residence. If there is a discrepancy (damaged or missing item) noted on the Inventory, it must be recorded at this time on the Delivery Exceptions column on your Inventory Form. Record the exception beside the corresponding number of the damaged or missing item, ask your Van Foreman for a Claim Form, and follow the instructions on the form for submitting a claim.
14. Final Bill of Lading
Once everything is unloaded and you have confirmed everything has been received in good order you will be given a final signed Bill of Lading and Inventories for your records. Don't forget to submit your moving expenses to your accountant as most moving expenses are tax deductible.

Origin Responsibilities
- Tractor Trailer units are in the range of 70 feet long and require ample space to maneuver. It is your responsibility to advise Canada's Superior Moving Company of any access issues such as parking restrictions, construction, inaccessible driveways and any other circumstances that would prevent the tractor trailer from getting within 100 feet of your residence. Sidewalks and driveways must be free of debris and snow. Please be advised that if the tractor trailer does not have adequate access, a smaller unit may be required to shuttle your goods, at an additional charge to you.
- It is your responsibility to ensure that you or your representative is available at your residence throughout the packing and loading process to authorize the move and sign all relocation documents such as the Bill of Lading and Inventory Forms.
- It is your responsibility to ensure items such as freezers and electronics have been serviced (disconnected, defrosted, cords wrapped) and are ready to ship on moving day.
- Any items that you pack are not covered for damage under your Transit Protection unless negligence occurs on our behalf.
- It is your right to review the Inventory Forms and approve the list of items shipped and the conditions of the items at the time of pick up.
- You will be required to complete an inspection of your home once we have completed loading to ensure we have packed and removed all items.
Destination Responsibilities
- Please ensure Canada's Superior Moving Company has contact phone numbers for you at destination – this is the only way we can reach you, so please advise us of all phone numbers and an e-mail address.
- Have your final payment ready for the driver at delivery. This is due prior to unloading and must be of the type listed on your contract. If you are paying by credit card, the card holder must be present with the card at the time of delivery. Credit card payments should be pre-authorized by Canada's Superior Moving Company.
- It is recommended that at least two persons be available to receive your shipment: one to check the items off the Inventory Form as they come into your home and a second to inspect the conditions of the items and direct us for placement of your items.
- Any damaged or missing items must be noted on the Inventory Forms prior to your driver’s departure to be considered a valid claim.
- Please ensure you have a complete set of signed and dated documents (Bill of Lading and Inventory Forms) prior to your driver’s departure.
C. Transit Protection (Protection of your goods in transit)
Canada's Superior Moving Company is committed to providing you the best possible transit protection for your goods. Although we have one of the lowest claim ratios in the moving industry, loss or damage of your goods can still occur. In order to meet the needs of our clients, Canada's Superior Moving Company offers two types of protection for your goods while in transit.
Type I: Released Value Protection
Released Value Protection is the most economical type of protection for your goods. This coverage is mandatory as per the Motor Carrier Act and is offered to you at no additional cost. However, this coverage is minimal and will cover your goods at a maximum of 60 cents per pound.
Although this coverage is the most economical you must carefully think before choosing this type of coverage because the average household goods are worth considerably more than 60 cents a pound. This coverage restricts the total value of your goods by multiplying the weight of your entire shipment by 60 cents. Loss or damage claims are settled based on the pound weight of the article multiplied by 60 cents.
An example of how this coverage works is as follows:
Your 32" TV is dropped and destroyed and you have chosen Released Value Protection. The weight of the TV is 200 pounds and the maximum amount of payment you would receive is 200 times 60 cents which equals $120 (200x.60 = $120). Obviously the TV cannot be replaced with a $120 but that is all that you will receive.
Canada's Superior Moving Company does not recommend Released Value Protection of your goods unless you have secondary coverage for your goods such as a home owner’s policy that covers your shipment while in transit. Please note that some homeowner policies have costly deductibles which are not worth paying. Canada's Superior Moving Company recommends checking with your insurance broker before choosing the right coverage for you.
Type II: Replacement Value Protection
This type of coverage is the most common chosen as well as the one Canada's Superior Moving Company recommends to all our clients. This protection is the most comprehensive plan available for the protection of your goods.
When choosing Replacement Value Protection, if an item is lost, damaged or destroyed, Canada's Superior Moving Company will either repair, replace with the same or like item, or offer a cash settlement for your item. The value of the item is determined at current market value and is not calculated based on depreciated value as some other companies do.
You have the option of declaring a value based on the weight of your shipment times an amount not less than $8 per pound. This means if your shipment is 5000 pounds you can declare a minimum $8 times 5000 pounds or choose a higher value such as $10 per pound. You can also declare a lump sum value (as long as it is higher than $8 per pound) such as $100,000
Although, this option is superior to the others there is an additional cost for it. Every thousand dollars of declared value for your goods will cost you $6. That means that if you request $100,000 of coverage it will cost you $600 (100 x $6).
An example of how this coverage works is as follows:
Your shipment weighs 5000 pounds and you decide to take the minimum $8 per pound option. This would cost you $240 (5000 times $8 = $40,000) (40x$6 =$240).
Now if the same 32” TV is destroyed and you have Replacement Value Protection, your TV would either be replaced with the same or comparable TV at the time of damage or you would be given the fair market value of the TV in a cash settlement. If the TV was just purchased two months ago for one thousand dollars you would receive $1000 settlement.
Exceptions from Transit Protection
Although you may have declared the Replacement Value Protection Canada's Superior Moving Company cannot cover certain items while in transit. The following is a non-exclusive list of non-protected items.
Owner Packed Cartons: Items not packed by Canada's Superior Moving Company which result in damage are not covered under transit protection unless there is exterior physical damage to the carton which is recorder on the inventory forms at the time of delivery.
Items of Extraordinary Value: Any article whose value exceeds $100 per pound such as:
- Jewelry
- Silverware
- Coins
- Stamps
- Stocks
- Computer software
Along with the items above any items of furniture worth more than $10,000 must be shipped along with an appraisal certificate from a reputable appraiser and attached to the inventory at the time of shipping.
Mechanical Condition: Canada's Superior Moving Company cannot cover some of your mechanical or electrical items due to their fragile nature. These items include but are not limited to:
- T.V.
- DVD players
- Stereo equipment
- Washers
- Dryers
- Refrigerators
- Freezers
- Computers
